She’s All That Charities

Connecting Girls & Mentors

A few weeks ago, I visited She's All That Charities in Owens Cross Roads. The organization focuses on helping girls from under resourced communities break the cycle of poverty through mentor relationships and preparation for their future success through job training and education. They also have a lot of fun!

The girls in the She's All That program are stunning!

Seeing the Beauty Inside

To treat the girls to a fun day of celebrating their beauty inside and out, Enhanced Beauty Make-Up Artists sponsored makeovers for all the girls, and photographer Glorianne Picini from Washington, D.C., did personalized head shots. Each of the girls' awesome personalities showed through in their cool outfit selections and super fun photo shoots!

Make up artist Presila Tolera is an expert!

Make up artist Anisha Morris is a pro!

The girls range from 8th grade to high school seniors. One benefit they receive at She's All That is the opportunity to explore their interests. From art to graphic design, professionals and members of the community helps the girls try out different skills.

Meeting a Need

She's All That Charities is a community-centered non-profit organization that is focused on meeting the need of local young women. Through mentoring relationships, as well as providing a safe place for the program participants to hang out after school, do their homework, and have fun, She's All That is helping young ladies see their potential and future possibilities.

Of course, the ladies made me look good too.

The She's All That clubhouse is set up with beautiful art and motivational words!

The girls held me up for some pictures. We tried to pose...

Get Involved

There are many great ways to support this awesome organization: donating time or money can changes these girls' lives. Financial contributions are appreciated, but strong female role models, encouraging the girls and speaking life into them, are essentials. Mentor applications are available on the website.

Sponsorship of the center or of an upcoming event, like the 5k run or golf tournament they recently hosted, help the center provide activities, motivational speakers, and a safe place for the girls.

This is why we do this.

Thank you to Glorianne Picini Photography for the fabulous photos! Check out more of Glorianne's gorgeous work at her site, Facebook, and Instagram.

Thank you to Enhance Beauty Make-Up Artists for the fabulous makeovers! Check out their work on Facebook and their website.

Downtown Series: Honest Coffee

Doc Porter and I hit up Honest to see what the hype is about!

Honestly... Delicious

Honest Coffee is stylish and clean, with an incredible hand-crafted menu, with delicious local treats! Doc got an iced coffee and I tried the Cortado.

The baristas expertly measured and steamed and created beautiful drinks!

Dripping to perfection.

Drew discusses the difference in a pourover coffee, as he slowly makes one.

Pourovers take time to be so good.

Specialty coffee and espresso drinks, Piper & Leaf tea, Chai Wallah tea, and specialty mixed coffee drinks! So many options!

Sweet eats and treats

In addition to delicious, freshly roasted coffee, Honest serves Piper and Leaf teas, Mason Dixon pastries and Scott's Orchard peaches for this season's Acai bowl, the Southerner - which I loved!

I enjoyed the Acai bowl on the patio.

Honest looks across Clinton Ave. at The Bottle and the Shops at Clinton Row.

Cortado and the Southerner Acai bowl with local peaches!

Franklin to Huntsville

Honest Coffee was started in Franklin, TN., to provide high quality coffee to Williamson County. Huntsville's growing downtown scene is the perfect setting for Honest's second coffee location.

Honest Coffee is cool.

Honest's inspiration and role model is none other than Honest Abe.

We met lots of fun people and got some great photos with locals - see them all on my Insta!

Honest Coffee is located in downtown Huntsville on the corner of Clinton Avenue and Jefferson Street. Check out their website for more information about their story. Follow their beautiful social media outlets on Facebook and Instagram, and then go hang out with a fresh, delicious coffee drink and locally crafted pastry!

Milk, steamed to perfection, creates beautiful latte art.

20/20 EyeCare – Eye Check Up!

I checked in at the front desk and then had to check out some sunglasses!

I looked good.

So many colors! So many styles!

This week, I went to visit my friend Dr. Neena James at 2020 Eye Care Centers to get my eyes checked and learn more about how she helps people.

Dr. James did several tests to check my vision. I have great vision.

Dr. James checked that my eyes were there.

Dr. James had some neat tools for testing different parts of the eye and sight.

20/20 Eye Care is located at 806 Regal Drive in Huntsville. The company is an independent practice and locally owned and operated for 30 years. Dr. James and the founder, Dr. Pittenger, provide hands-on care for their patients, ensuring the quality is high and the care is consistent!

Dr. James and her team took awesome care of me and my eyeballs!

Dr. James shares that the focus of the company is thorough exams, stressing long-term ocular care and function based on each client's unique lifestyle needs. She says, "I try to take a more holistic approach to medicine; when appropriate, I recommend daily routine changes and home remedies, whenever I can, to complement traditional treatments. I always like to have my patients leaving, having learned something new about their eyes."

The team tests my eyesight.

I can see!

New glasses.

This looks cool.

Dr. James says the importance of a comprehensive eye exam is both to check the health of the eye and a person's sight, but other systemic conditions can be detected early through eye exams. This can help with early treatment and the management plan of conditions like diabetes, high blood pressure, high cholesterol, anemia and others.

Dr. James tells me what she sees inside my eye.

I can see colors!

Dr. James and her team were great to work with, giving me lots of information as I took the eye exam, and helping me to understand what they were doing and why, as well as what they saw in my eyes. I got a clean bill of health!

Looking good!

Feeling good!

Follow Dr. James and her adventures in optometry online and on Instagram, and go get an eye exam! She recommends children get an eye exam each year till 16 years old, and till 40, someone with 20/20 eyesight should go every 1-2 years. Over 40, getting checked yearly is also important. Take care of your eyes, and see something beautiful today!

Don't forget to check out my Instagram for more UNRELEASED PHOTOS!

New Year’s Eve in Huntsvegas

The Silvery Moon Band is a local jazz group.

I checked out The Silvery Moon Band a few weeks ago and really enjoyed their music and performance. I tracked them down to find out what they are up to for New Year's Eve weekend, as well as some other great New Year's Eve party options in the Rocket City.

If I had to pick an instrument to play, it would be the trum...bone!

Barbara LaMere and her husband, Bob, are the band's vocalists.

There are a lot of musicians in the Silvery Moon Band!

The Silvery Moon Band was formed in 2014 by Anna Fergison, who also serves as the band and business manager, and features 18 musicians for the traditional Big Band. They also have a group of 8-9 for smaller venues and events.

Mark your calendars for Silvery Moon Band's next big event. They'll be at Botanical Gardens' Love Your Gardens on February 16th.

Hanging out with the band!

Anna and I hit it off; I'd hang out with her.

I met lots of live-music lovers at the event!

I played the drums for a minute!

I also met some Fun Doug fans too. You're making me blush.

Pop in for What’s Popp’N!

I dropped into What's Popp'N? to finish up my Christmas gift shopping. With their delicious gourmet popcorn options and creative baskets and tins, I found something for everyone on my list.

I looked at all the fun flavors to pick out the perfect gifts!

Dreams of Gourmet Popcorn

Lisa Jackmon opened What's Popp'N in 2011 after several years of designing and working on her dream business. She had enjoyed giving popcorn tins before she moved to Huntsville and when she moved to the Rocket City, she realized there were not any local shops to purchase the tins! She knew she had to show Huntsville what they were missing!

Check out the gift basket display!

I'm amazed at the over 70 popcorn flavors - and they have cotton candy!

Flavors & Flavors of Sweet & Savors

Classic Buttery, Kettle, Cinnamon Kettle, Bacon, Garlic Parmesan, Pizza, Nacho, Cheddar, White Cheddar, Cheddar Ranch, Spicy Cheddar, Caramel, Banana, Blue Raspberry, Cake Batter, Cheesecake, White Chocolate and so much more...

Doug Visits H2O2 Hair Studio

I woke up and looked in the mirror this morning and realized I couldn't keep getting my picture taken with my hair looking like this.

Hanging out in the waiting area at H2O2 to get my hair trimmed.

Meagan gets me ready to look amazing.

I headed to my friends' Meagan and Jason Haney's hair studio, H2O2, to get a new style - and appreciate their art! The couple opened the company in 2014, intending to create a comfortable styling experience for women and men.

Creating a Creative Name

When founding their hair studio, the Haneys were considering calling the salon Peroxide, but thought it sounded too much like the name of a dance club! They decided on H2O2, the chemical make-up of peroxide, because Jason and Meagan are two Haneys ("H's") and their two dogs are Ogre and Ozma ("O's)!

Jason has been doing hair for 6 years and specializes in custom color.

Experiencing the fun and unique product lines for men and women.

Meeting H2O2's mascot, the wild hog!

The art is a great part of the H2O2 experience!

They have some beautiful and effective products!

Opening the salon also gave Jason and Meagan a place to hang their art collection. Jason's first degree is in art, and his vast collection has found a home in the hair studio. Many of the works have upcycled and customized frames from a local framer, Vaughn Bocchino. A lot of the furniture is also refurbished antiques from Meagan's father.

Long before doing hair, Jason's first love was collecting art.

Meagan and Jason, and the two other stylists, Amanda Massey and Ashley Smith, offer full service hair cut and color, as well as formal hair styles for events (like Homecoming, Christmas parties and more!), and blowout treatments, a luxury rejuvenating hair experience.

So fresh and so clean, clean.

Book your hair appointment with H2O2 Hair Studio at 256-886-8147.

H2O2 is located at 250 Governor’s Drive, Suite K. Check them out on the web, Facebook, Pinterest, and Instagram.

Doug’s Adventure (Boot Camp)

After getting to eat so many delicious treats in the Huntsville area, I realized I had to balance it with my activity level, so I talked with Joe Martin of Huntsville Adventure Boot Camp and jumped into a class.

Joe can jump higher than I can.

We jumped rope, did TRX exercises, kettle bell work, and got pumped with some great music. Joe coached and motivated me throughout. I learned I've got to engage more....

Joe gives me some tip on form and building muscles.

Get Joetivated

Joe was working full-time on Redstone Arsenal when he realized the need for an engaging, motivating, "Relentless Positivity" group exercise classes. He opened Huntsville Adventure Boot Camp in Summer 2009 with a focus on helping people change their lifestyle and habits to accomplish "permanent changes, not temporary results."

Glad to have my headband right now.

Pedaling for my life. Also cookies.

Attendees were surprised... at my strength!

Huntsville Adventure Boot Camp offers classes in Huntsville, Harvest, and Madison with both morning and evening classes, and for the first time ever, Co-Ed classes are being offered in Harvest!

Doug Loves I Love Juice Bar

This week, Doug visited I Love Juice Bar in Huntsville for a shot of wheat grass and a smoothie! In addition to a huge variety of delicious and oh-so-nutritious juices, smoothies, and shots shots shots with essential oils and super foods, Juice Bar has a range of healthy food options, local honey and other fun, healthy products.

I had to check out the cleanses!

I Love Juice Bar's Huntsville location opened in early 2014. Managing partner Christy Graves and her business partner realized that fresh juice, and healthy, vegetarian options were limited in Huntsville. "It was a missing part of the community, and it was a perfect fit for Huntsville," Christy says. Her favorite part of running Juice Bar is the changes she has seen in people's lives and "the stories we hear about helping people through nutrition," she says.

Juice Bar team member Austin prepares juices while I watched.

The Juice Bar team members were super friendly and informative. They answered my questions and made some great recommendations to help me find the best smoothie to try today! There are so many options, I'll be back to try more flavors, but my favorite so far is the Ginger Greens, because I love ginger!

A great option Juice Bar offers is three different fresh Juice Cleanses. Some of the benefits listed on Juice Bar's website are general detoxification, boosting the immune system, improved overall health, and others. Visit the website for details about the cleanse options and benefits to help you reach your health goals!

I love I Love Juice Bar!

Juice Bar is located at 4800 Whitesburg Dr, Suite 34, next to Bonefish Grill in the Fresh Market shopping center at the corner of Airport Road and Whitesburg Drive. Follow them on Facebook, Instagram, and check out the website, www.ILoveJuiceBar.com, for full ingredient lists for all their juices, smoothies, juice cleanses.

Local Businesses Building Each Other Up

On Wednesday, I went to visit a local Business Networking International (BNI) chapter, Givers Gain 4 Life, and their Business Expo. There were many businesses set up as vendors and many guests visiting their tables. I met some great local business men and women!

I had to hug my good friend and wonderful banker, Crystal Green of Cadence Bank.

The room was full of vendors and guests at the business expo!

Functional Chiropractic staff Doc and Teri Porter enjoy talking with Cameron Starnes of ADS Security and Brian Evans of A V Enthusiast.

Some of those businesses included This Side Up Moving, Advocare with Sara Edelman, Raeley Stevenson Photography, Rocket City Property Management, local Farmers Insurance Agent Nicole Stiltner, Madison Family Care, Healing Haven with Christine Childress, and many more.

Christine Childress with Healing Haven

and Doug strike a pose.

Christine Childress with Healing Haven shares

a sniff of peppermint essential oil.

Givers Gain 4 Life meets weekly at the Huntsville Country Club on Wednesdays from 10:30 a.m. to noon. The BNI chapter's weekly meetings create the opportunity for the group to build relationships with each other, which allows them to give warm referrals to quality local businesses, as well as learn how to contribute to other locally owned small businesses in Huntsville and Madison.

I was quite underdressed for the event, but I wanted to show my support.

I walked around and met local business owners and team members from all different kinds of businesses. From personal and health services like Huntsville Adventure Boot Camp and Pampered Chef, to home services such as ShutterLuxe Custom Blinds and B&D HVAC Services , to business services, I made some great connections at this fun event.

I try to network throughout the year, to learn about other local companies, to meet other local business owners, and to keep my company, Functional Chiropractic, up to date on local business opportunities. BNI is a great way to do this, and I had a lot of fun at the Business Expo. Someone even had doughnuts! I love doughnuts.

Lori Bedwell with Pampered Chef showed me some of her awesome kitchen products.

Check out some of these great local companies we met at the business expo, and if you own, operate, or even just want to grow your business, check out the Givers Gain 4 Life BNI chapter!
