How chiropractic coverage generally works in Alabama
Alabama law requires state-regulated health plans to include chiropractic coverage, which applies to many individual and family plans. But self-insured employer plans follow federal ERISA rules instead, and the state mandate does not apply to them. Many large employers in the Huntsville area, including defense contractors and federal agencies, run self-insured plans.
To find your category, check your Summary Plan Description or ask HR. If you see self-funded or self-insured in your documents, the state mandate likely does not apply. One important note about our own practice: Functional Chiropractic is cash-based and self-pay, so we do not bill or accept insurance. We keep pricing up front and are glad to help you understand your benefits no matter what plan you carry.
What different plan types tend to cover
Coverage varies a lot from one plan and carrier to the next, so always verify with your insurer. As a general picture: Medicare Part B covers manual spinal manipulation for a documented issue, with coinsurance after your deductible. Alabama Medicaid does not cover chiropractic for most adults, with limited exceptions. Private carriers and employer plans commonly include chiropractic with annual visit caps and copays that differ by plan.
Federal employees (FEHB) and military families (TRICARE) often have some chiropractic benefit as well, with rules that vary by plan. The reliable step is to call the member services number on your card and ask about your specific chiropractic benefit, visit limits, and referral requirements.
Care after a car accident or workplace injury
If your pain started after a car wreck or an on-the-job injury, your regular health insurance usually is not the right place to look. Chiropractic care after a collision is typically handled through auto insurance (the at-fault driver's liability or your own uninsured/underinsured motorist coverage). Work injuries generally fall under workers' compensation, so report the injury to your employer and get authorized for care.
What to do if your insurance doesn't cover chiropractic
No chiropractic coverage does not mean quality care is out of reach. Because we are a self-pay practice, these are the paths our own patients use every day:
- HSA and FSA accounts. Chiropractic is an IRS-approved eligible expense, so paying with pre-tax dollars effectively lowers your cost.
- Simple self-pay pricing. Paying out of pocket is often more affordable than people expect, with no surprise bills after the fact.
- Ask about payment options. We are happy to walk through your options before your first visit so there are no surprises.
